Cinco de Mayo is a great opportunity to eat good Mexican food, drink your favorite margarita, or pop open a Corona all in the name of Mexican independence! Wait…May 5th is not the date of Mexico’s independence but it it is the official date of the defeat of French forces in 1862 in the town of Puebla. We celebrate this holiday in honor of all Americans of Mexican ancestry. Hola, hola!
Here are three ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo whether you want to stay in and enjoy a mexican dinner with your family, invite friends over on the weekend, or host a Cinco de Mayo pot luck. Cinco de Mayo is a great theme for celebrating good food and good drinks with great friends!
At-home Cinco de Mayo Menu with your family: Here’s a fun and creative menu that takes 30 minutes to make!
Appetizers: Chips & Salsa
Entree: Black Bean Soup with Asiago cheese, Grilled Chicken Tacos with Guacamole
Dessert: Pineapple Coconut Ice Cream (my favorite is Haagen dazs)
Beverages: Seagram’s Escape Lime Margarita Cooler, Corona’s with lime, & Non-alcoholic Margaritas for your kids (mix 1 can thawed lime aid with 2 cans Fresca, stir and add lime wedges).
Weekend Cinco de Mayo Menu:
Appetizers: Chips & Salsa & Guacamole
Entree: Shrimp Stuffed with Cilantro Goat Cheese, Black Bean & Corn Salad
Dessert: Broiled Pineapple with Tequila
Beverages: Margaritas or Mexican Beer
Cinco de Mayo Pot Luck:
You can do a lot of different fun and creative menus with this theme! Why not throw a little competition in and ask your guests to bring their favorite salsa and chips (some people love blue chips, others prefer yellow!), take a vote and award the winner a festive salsa bowl or six pack of Mexican beer.
As the host, I would make the entree (see sample menu below) and one beverage, assign the side dishes and dessert to your guests. Your guests will be happy to bring their own beverages, all you have to do is ask! 🙂
Sample Menu: Appetizer; Salsa contest, Entree; Pulled Pork Tacos with Apricot-jalapeno Sauce, Black Bean and Corn Salad, Dessert; Strawberries drizzled with chocolate balsamic vinegar. Beverages; Seagram’s Escapes Lime Margarita Cooler, your favorite Margarita recipe, or Mexican Beer. Yum!
